Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam met today with representatives from Akeyla Maldives Company to explore innovative, container-based fish farming systems.
The high-level meeting, held at the Ministry's headquarters in Male', was also attended by Senior Officials from the Ministry.
During the discussions, Minister Shiyam highly appreciated the integrated and sustainable approach of the technology. He particularly praised the system's ability to reuse nutrient-rich wastewater from fish farming for agricultural fertigation, demonstrating a strong potential to link the nation's aquaculture and agricultural production frameworks more sustainably. Ministry officials noted that recycling fish tank tailwater to naturally fertilize and hydrate local crops creates a zero-waste, closed-loop model that maximizes resource efficiency.
Akeyla Maldives Company operates these specialized, containerized Recirculating Aquaculture Systems in close partnership with the engineering and biotechnology firm Verdeterra. The company specializes in deploying plug-and-play eco-culture technology that transforms standard insulated shipping containers into intensive, land-independent fish grow-out environments. By shielding aquaculture from changing open-ocean conditions and eliminating the need for vast plots of fertile soil, the company's modular setups bypass the severe land constraints of the Maldives to offer a highly climate-resilient solution for localized food production.
