The Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), in partnership with the Nekton Foundation and the Maldives National University (MNU), hosted the "Deep Reef Event" today at the MNU Business School to showcase findings from the first-ever comprehensive survey of the Maldivian deep ocean.
The event highlights key scientific insights from the "First Descent: Maldives Mission," a collaborative expedition that explored marine environments from the surface down to depths of 1,000 meters along a 590-kilometer stretch spanning from North Malé Atoll to Addu Atoll. Research presentations focus on fish communities across varying depth zones, deep-sea elasmobranchii, zooplankton connectivity, and environmental DNA (eDNA), reflecting the Maldives' expanding role in ocean science and deep-sea research.
