High Commissioner of the Maldives to Bangladesh, H.E. Ms. Shiuneen Rasheed, has called for expanded seafood exports into Bangladesh, positioning the Maldives' sustainable fisheries sector as a catalyst for stronger bilateral economic ties.
Speaking at "The Great Tuna Gala – Flavours from the Sunny Side" held at Sheraton Dhaka, High Commissioner Shiuneen addressed an audience of around 250 high-level guests, including Chief Guest M. Rashiduzzaman Millat (Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism of Bangladesh), senior government officials, foreign diplomats, seafood buyers, and industry leaders.
In her keynote address, the High Commissioner emphasized the vital link between the Maldivian people, the ocean, and the nation's commercial fishing industry.
"Fisheries holds a central place in the Maldives' economy, island communities, and culture," High Commissioner Shiuneen stated, highlighting the nation's iconic pole-and-line tuna fishery.
She stressed the importance of maintaining responsible fishing practices, pointing out that one-by-one tuna harvesting remains the foundation of the Maldives' global reputation for eco-friendly, premium seafood.
Pointing to growing regional economic ties, the High Commissioner highlighted the huge potential to expand the market presence of Maldivian tuna and value-added fisheries products in Bangladesh. She noted that increasing transport and trade connectivity between the two nations offers a timely opportunity to boost seafood commerce, form direct business-to-business partnerships, and drive mutual economic growth.
