The B. Dharavandhoo harbor upgrade and expansion project has reached 68 percent overall completion, contractor Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing & Urban Development confirmed.
Initiated by the Government of Maldives and awarded to MTCC in January 2023, the design-and-build project is structured to expand vessel capacity and address long-standing access limitations for local boat owners and commercial operators.
According to the latest project scope details, the development package encompasses 38,774 cubic meters of harbor dredging, a 322-meter precast L-block quay wall, and 660 meters of rock boulder shore protection. The project also features a 140-meter jetty, a 16-meter bridge connection, and 1,990 square meters of paved harbor surfaces.
Active field operations are currently centered on constructing the outer breakwater, aligning the quay wall structure, and installing precast concrete blocks along the harbor perimeter.
Once completed, the modernized harbor facility will improve operational safety for sea transport, enhance vessel retrieval, and support growing maritime commercial and tourism activity across the island
