MNDF Coastguard Intercepts Foreign Vessel Operating Illegally in Maldivian Waters

The MNDF Coastguard has intercepted and seized a foreign fishing vessel operating illegally within the Maldives' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) during a targeted surveillance operation.

According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the foreign craft, carrying seven crew members, was brought under the custody of MNDF Coastguard Ship Imaduddin. The interdict took place approximately 46 nautical miles northwest of HA. Thuraakunu at 18:34 hrs on 30 September 2026. Official sources have not yet confirmed the country of origin or registration of the vessel.

The MNDF confirmed that Coastguard personnel are currently escorting the apprehended vessel to HDh. Kulhudhuffushi for further inspection and joint investigation with relevant state authorities.

The MNDF Coastguard continues to maintain active maritime patrols and heightened monitoring across the nation's EEZ to protect Maldivian sovereign waters and deter illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities.
