Citing the unauthorized mass issuance of licenses in violation of regulations, the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Gadhdhoo Council has temporarily suspended all services related to issuing marine vessel and land vehicle driving licenses. This announcement was made through an official statement released by the council.
According to the Gadhdhoo Council, the services were halted due to grave negligence and unlawful practices intended for major financial gains by certain parties. Records show that over 1,600 licenses were issued by the island over the past year—averaging around 133 licenses per month. However, information obtained from examiners revealed that even two to three individuals failed to complete practical examinations on a weekly basis.
The council stated that the issue came to light after the 5th-term councilors assumed office and received numerous complaints regarding the licensing process. Investigations uncovered that a license was applied for by an individual in Malé on August 30, 2026, and unlawfully issued by the Gadhdhoo Council just a day later on August 31, 2026. The council attributes these actions to illicit activities orchestrated with the involvement of certain members from the 4th-term council.
Following these findings, senior ministry officials visited Gadhdhoo on September 17, 2026, to conduct monitoring assessments, during which they confirmed that numerous regulatory violations had occurred.
While licensing services remain temporarily suspended, the Gadhdhoo Council assured the public that it is actively consulting with relevant government authorities to resume the service strictly in accordance with laws and regulations, ensuring transparency and accountability for the community.
