Following the government's decision to bring Agro National Corporation (AgroNAT) under Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) as a subsidiary, the executive leadership of both enterprises met for an introductory and operational alignment session.
The meeting took place this past Thursday at the MIFCO head office, chaired by MIFCO CEO Mohamed Anas.
The primary focus was aligning operations across both companies, extending support to local producers, and establishing unified efforts to reinforce national food security. The leadership explored joint initiatives aimed at boosting agricultural productivity alongside fisheries infrastructure.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the decision to restructure AgroNAT as a subsidiary of MIFCO under the administration's broader SOE right-sizing and expenditure-reduction policy during a press conference at the President’s Office on September 7.
Announcing the initiative, President Muizzu stated that integrating the operations of both state companies will unlock substantial economies of scale. He noted that creating synergies between the fisheries and agricultural sectors will deliver direct, tangible benefits to the general public.
Additionally, the President revealed that once development of the modern "mixed market" in Malé is complete, management and operation of the facility—designed to market local fisheries and farm produce—will also be handed over to MIFCO.
