The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that channel breakwater profiling works are currently progressing on-site under the L. Gan Harbour Upgrading Project.
Undertaken by MTCC, this major infrastructure development is a key project aimed at expanding regional transport and economic activity. With 87% of the work now completed, the project has entered its final stages.
Signed with the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure on 25 August 2021 and mobilized on 5 May 2022, MTCC's primary contractual obligations include 33,793 cubic meters of dredging operations and 574.6 meters of rock shore protection. Details released by MTCC further specify the construction of a 310-meter precast L-block quay wall, 1,976 square meters of harbour paving, a 151-meter concrete jetty, and a 25-meter bridge.
Under the agreement, the company is also required to construct sand-filled breakwaters, install a ramp and culverts, and set up harbour navigational lights.
MTCC noted that because L. Gan serves as the atoll's central hub—connected via a link road to Fonadhoo, Kadhdhoo, and Maandhoo—upgrading the harbour to modern standards will bring immense convenience and safety to the transportation of passengers, commercial goods, and fisheries catch.
