The Secretariat of the Gemanafushi Council in Gaafu Alif Atoll has shared key challenges and grievances faced by local fishermen in a meeting with senior officials from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources.
The discussions took place during a consultative session convened by the constituency’s Member of Parliament and the local council to address current conditions within the island's fishing sector.
The meeting was attended by Gemanafushi MP Asadhullaa Shihab, Gemanafushi Council President Ismail Yaameen, and council members. Representing the Fisheries Ministry were State Minister Aminath Hussain Shareef and other senior officials.
Discussions covered obstacles currently hindering local fishermen as well as broader opportunities to expand both the fisheries and agricultural sectors on the island. Additionally, the council shared details on key local initiatives and development projects planned to strengthen the fishing community.
Long recognized as one of the nation's premier pole-and-line tuna hubs, Gemanafushi's fleet—once substantially larger—has now dropped to just nine modern, fully equipped vessels exceeding 100 feet that fish regularly. This contraction is closely tied to a noticeable decline in youth engagement. While the island's fleet once relied heavily on local youth, many have transitioned away from the sea toward state-sponsored land jobs, often handed out during election cycles to secure votes. Faced with these challenges, the council continues to actively push for the island's youth to return and revitalize this vital industry.
