Purchasing Skipjack Tuna at MVR 21/kg Is a Change Under Government’s Sustainable Fisheries Policy: MIFCO

Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has stated that setting the purchase price of skipjack tuna at MVR 21.00 per kilogram is a strategic adjustment implemented under the government's broader policy to promote sustainable fisheries and ensure fair value for fishermen.

Addressing the change, MIFCO stated: "This is a change brought taking into account demand and supply, to provide a fair price to fishermen, and under the government's policy to strengthen sustainable fisheries."

The revised rate took effect today, August 29, 2026, across all primary industrial complexes, including Felivaru, Kooddoo, Addu, and Thinadhoo—as well as the company’s collector vessels nationwide.

MIFCO's fish purchase rates across all centres and vessels today:

• Skipjack Tuna: MVR 21.00 per kg

• Yellowfin Tuna (15 kg and above): MVR 25.00 per kg

• Yellowfin Tuna (10 to 15 kg): MVR 20.00 per kg

The latest MVR 1.00 increase follows an earlier adjustment in mid-June 2026, when MIFCO moved the purchase rate from an MVR 18.00 floor up to MVR 20.00 per kilogram.

According to MIFCO, the move aligns procurement with dynamic market conditions, demand-and-supply trends, and seasonal catch cycles while keeping collection points competitive.
