The Gaafu Dhaalu Vaadhoo Island Council has announced that it is recruiting a qualified examiner to conduct practical driving tests for engine-driven maritime vessels.
According to announcement (IUL)421/ESMSED/421/2026/33, issued on August 16, 2026, by Council President Lam'aan Waheed, the council is actively making necessary preparations to begin issuing maritime vessel licenses locally. The initiative follows a decision by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to decentralize maritime licensing services, delegating licensing authority to councils across the nation.
To qualify for the role, candidates must possess a valid Coastal Navigation Certificate, with preference given to applicants holding licenses across multiple vessel categories. Additionally, candidates are required to have at least one year of experience operating marine vessels after receiving their license. The appointed examiner will be compensated at a rate of MVR 35 per candidate tested.
Interested individuals are required to submit an application letter along with copies of their maritime driving license, Coastal Navugation Certificate , and National Identity Card to info@gaafdhaalvaadhoo.gov.mv by 14:00 hrs on August 27, 2026.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in the government's decentralization efforts, aimed at bringing essential public services closer to island communities. By enabling local councils to conduct maritime examinations and issue licenses directly, the policy reduces the need for residents in outer atolls to travel to regional hubs or the capital to obtain their credentials.
