Applications are now open for a specialized four-day Diamond Squid (Thuthi Bovadilamas) fishing training program in GDh. Fiyoaree, jointly organized by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources and the Fiyoaree Island Council.
Designed to drive innovation in the fisheries sector, the initiative aims to introduce alternative deep-sea fishing techniques while empowering local youth and women to diversify the blue economy.
Hands-On Training and Business Development
Scheduled for late August, the four-day program blends theoretical classroom sessions with hands-on practical experience in deep-sea waters.
Beyond core harvesting techniques, participants will gain comprehensive business training, including:
Business Management & Strategy: How to launch and run a fisheries business, perform market surveys, and navigate local markets.
Financial Literacy: Profit-and-loss calculation, accurate product pricing, and basic record-keeping.
Value Addition & Packaging: Best practices for food packaging, the benefits and legal requirements of proper labeling, and methods for processing value-added fish products.
Expert instruction will be delivered directly by technical specialists from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources.
Unlocking the Maldives' Deep-Sea Potential
Diamond squid fishing targets deep-water species found in the open ocean surrounding the Maldives. By training locals to tap into these unexploited deep-sea resources, the Ministry seeks to maximize the sustainable value of the nation’s marine territory and create new revenue streams for island communities.
The Ministry initially opened Expression of Interest (EOI) calls for island councils nationwide on June 25, 2026, running through July 15, 2026, with Fiyoaree Council successfully stepping forward to host this round.
How to Apply
The opportunity is open to existing fisheries workers and anyone interested in entering the industry.
Interested applicants from GDh. Fiyoaree must submit their details—including full name, ID card number, permanent address, and contact number—via Viber to the Fiyoaree Council at 9154339 by August 16, 2026.
