The pole-and-line fish aggregating device (FAD), anchored near the island of GA. Dhaandhoo, has broken loose and drifted away, causing widespread concern among the local fishing community.
According to local vessel captains operating in the area, the detached buoy was the primary FAD positioned approximately 16 miles east of Dhaandhoo.
Severe Disruptions for GA Atoll Fishermen
With the crucial fish aggregating device now missing, vessels relying on the area during the ongoing fishing season are facing significant operational challenges. Fishermen have highlighted that the loss will severely impact their daily catches and increase fuel consumption as they search further afield.
The affected FAD is situated in a high-yield zone utilized extensively by pole-and-line fleets across the entire GA Atoll—a region heavily dependent on these waters to supply tuna to the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).
In light of the heavy reliance on this infrastructure, local fishermen and vessel owners are urgently calling upon relevant authorities to expedite repair and redeployment efforts to restore normalcy to the region's fishing industry.
