President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that yellowfin tuna fishermen can secure higher prices and a competitive market only if the state fisheries company, MIFCO, is active in that market.
Speaking on the second episode of the President's Office podcast "The Pulse", the President said that bringing MIFCO back into the yellowfin tuna fishery is among his presidential pledges. He noted that when he assumed office, MIFCO had stopped buying yellowfin tuna, and efforts are currently underway to bring MIFCO back into this business.
"We are working to bring MIFCO back into the yellowfin tuna fishery. God willing, we are working to achieve more things step by step through this. God willing, that result will be achieved," the President said.
The President further stated that with MIFCO having ceased buying tuna, the yellowfin tuna fishery has largely become a private sector business. He believes that yellowfin tuna fishermen will get a competitive price when MIFCO operates within the yellowfin tuna trade, and the results of the ongoing efforts will be seen.
The President said that the best price for tuna can only be provided when MIFCO reaches that level, and the government will carry out this work with the participation of those engaged in the yellowfin tuna fishery.
