With the weather worsening across the Maldives, a Yellow Alert has been issued for several atolls.
The Maldives Meteorological Service issued the Yellow Alert from Shaviyani Atoll to Alif Dhaal Atoll.
The alert, effective from 07:15 to 11:15 in the morning, states that heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in the alerted area.
The weather also worsened from Haa Alif Atoll to Laamu Atoll, with a White Alert in effect from 02:00 last night until 08:00 this morning. However, no further alerts have been issued for that area at this time.
Forecasting the weather for the next 24 hours, the Met Office stated that some southern islands will experience showers and thunderstorms, while other areas will face rain and heavy thunderstorms. Winds are expected to blow from the west and northwest in the southern atolls at speeds between 13 to 23 miles per hour. In other areas, winds will blow from the southeast and south at speeds between 7 to 17 miles per hour, with gusts up to 40 miles per hour during squalls.
The Met Office predicts that the southern seas will be rough. Seas in other areas will be moderately rough, becoming rough during squalls.
Due to the bad weather, the Met Office has urged everyone to be cautious of the weather conditions.
