Due to worsening weather conditions, the white alert issued for the southern atolls this morning has been extended.
The National Meteorological Service issued a white alert for the southern atolls at 07:25 this morning, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and wind gusts of up to 40 mph. This alert, initially issued until 12:00 pm, has just been extended. The alert is now extended until 06:00 pm.
Along with the southern atolls, a white alert has also been issued for some central atolls from 12:00 pm to 06:00 pm. The white alert was issued for Thaa Atoll and Laamu Atoll anticipating heavy rain, thunderstorms, and wind gusts of up to 40 mph.
Forecasting the weather for the next 24 hours, the National Meteorological Service stated that rain and thunderstorms are expected across various parts of the country. Winds are expected to blow from the northeast and east at speeds between 13 mph and 23 mph.
According to the National Meteorological Service, seas are also expected to be moderately rough. Wave heights are estimated to be between 4 and 7 feet. Therefore, the agency has advised seafarers to be cautious of the weather.
