Due to worsening weather conditions, the National Meteorological Service has extended the yellow alert issued for the northern atolls.
Anticipating heavy rain and thunderstorms, the Met Office has extended the alert initially issued this morning for the area between Sh. Atoll and ADh. Atoll, which was set to expire at 11:15 am, until 05:00 pm today.
The alert issued at 11:15 am also includes the two northernmost atolls, HA and HDh. The newly issued alert also states that heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected between HA and ADh atolls during the alert period.
The Met Office predicts that until 6:00 pm today, winds in the southern atolls will blow from the west and northwest at speeds between 13 and 23 miles per hour. In other areas, winds are expected to blow from the southeast and south at speeds between 7 and 17 miles per hour, with gusts up to 40 miles per hour during showers.
The Met Office also predicts that seas in the south will be rough, while seas in other areas will be moderate, becoming rough during showers. Wave heights in the south are estimated to be between four and seven feet, while wave heights in the north and central regions are expected to be between three and six feet.
As the weather is deteriorating during this period, the Met Office has urged everyone to be cautious of the weather.
