Due to the ongoing Southwest Monsoon rains across the Maldives, the National Meteorological Centre has issued a Yellow Alert for the northern atolls.
The Yellow Alert was first issued for the northern atolls at 02:00 pm yesterday. Since then, the alert duration has been extended 6 times.
The alert was last extended at 05:00 pm. As it stands, the alert covering from HA. Atoll to ADh. Atoll will expire at 10:00 pm.
With this latest extension, some atolls in the central Maldives have also been included in the alert. The alert states that heavy rain and winds between 25 to 30 miles per hour are expected from HA. to V. Atoll. The National Meteorological Centre also forecasts winds to gust up to 50 miles per hour during squalls, with very rough seas.
While the National Meteorological Centre has advised caution regarding the weather, the Coast Guard and Police have urged seafarers to pay special attention to the weather. They have advised against making non-essential journeys at this time, and if travel is necessary, to ensure that safety and communication equipment on the vessel are in good working order, and to prioritize the safety and security of passengers and crew.
