President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the long-standing corruption within the state fisheries company, Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), will be completely uprooted.
Speaking to journalists who accompanied him upon concluding his trip to Huvadhu Atoll, the President said that through the ongoing efforts to reform MIFCO, work has begun to strengthen the company in the way fishermen desire. Through this work, the President said that the long-standing corruption taking place there will be uprooted.
"Various long-standing wrongdoings are happening inside there. I believe these appear to be acts of corruption. We will uproot all of that (corruption) completely from there. The work has begun with that resolve," the President said.
The President noted that while a capable individual from outside the usual fisheries sector has been brought in and entrusted with managing the company, the management of the place is being closely and directly monitored. The President said that the current efforts will strengthen its management and reduce waste.
The President said the assurance he wants to give to fishermen is that efforts will be made to advance and diversify the fisheries industry by establishing cold storages and increasing processing plants. He also gave the assurance that the fisheries sector will be expanded to the highest possible extent.
