The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the contractor for the project, has stated that the N. Velidhoo harbour development project is progressing at a fast pace.
According to the project update released by MTCC, 19% of the overall project has been completed. MTCC stated that the construction of the harbour's capping beam and the installation of the harbour pavement are currently underway.
The Velidhoo harbour development project was awarded to MTCC on December 29, 2022. Although the project was contracted to be completed within 500 days for 47.21 million MVR, MTCC mobilized the site and commenced work on February 12, 2023.
Under this project, operations include dredging 67,020 cubic meters of the harbour area, dredging 19,513 cubic meters of the new harbour basin, dredging 2,414 cubic meters of the channel, and dredging 24,742 cubic meters of the vessel beaching area. Additionally, the project involves the construction of a 12-meter breakwater, 473-meter revetment, 167-meter quay wall, a ramp, a concrete jetty, 2,433 square meters of harbour pavement, and the installation of harbour and channel lights.
With the development of the Velidhoo harbour, embarking and disembarking will become easier for the public, bringing numerous social and economic benefits to the island's residents. Specifically, the harbour will receive additional protection against the massive swells of the Baraveli Kandu, providing more space for vessels to dock at the quay wall.
