Velidhoo Harbour Development Project Progressing Rapidly

The contractor for the N. Velidhoo harbour development project, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), has stated that the project is progressing at a rapid speed.

Looking at the latest project updates released by MTCC, 20% of the overall project has been completed. While the casting of the harbour's capping beam was completed last January, MTCC stated that the installation of the pavement in the harbour area is currently underway.

The Velidhoo harbour development project was awarded to MTCC on December 29, 2022. Although the work was awarded to MTCC to be completed within 500 days for 47.21 million Rufiyaa, MTCC mobilized the site and commenced work on February 12, 2023.

Under this project, dredging operations will involve 67,020 cubic meters, dredging of a new harbour basin of 19,513 cubic meters, channel dredging of 2,414 cubic meters, and dredging of a vessel beaching area of 24,742 cubic meters. Additionally, the project includes the construction of a 12-meter breakwater, a 473-meter revetment, a 167-meter quay wall, a ramp, a concrete jetty, a 2,433-square-meter harbour pavement, and the installation of harbour and channel lights.

With the development of the Velidhoo harbour, embarking and disembarking will become easier for the citizens, bringing numerous social and economic benefits to the island's residents. In particular, the harbour will gain additional protection against the massive swells of the Baraveli Sea, and more space will be available for vessels to moor at the harbour's quay wall.
