Vaadhoo Council Postpones Fishing Tournament

R. Vaadhoo Council has decided to postpone the fishing tournament initially planned to mark this year's Fishermen's Day.

With the aim of encouraging citizens to seek profit from fishing and to develop the fisheries sector, the council had previously scheduled the fishing tournament for Saturday, December 20, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

In an announcement released today notifying the public of the change in the scheduled date, the Vaadhoo Council stated that the fishing tournament is now set to be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026. With this change, interested parties have been given an additional opportunity to participate in the fishing tournament.

The council has requested that new parties wishing to participate in the fishing tournament submit their forms before 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The council stated that teams that have already submitted forms to participate in the fishing tournament will not need to submit forms again. The council also mentioned that if parties who have already submitted forms wish to make changes to their teams, the opportunity to do so is open during this period.

The Vaadhoo Council stated that they want to conduct this fishing tournament as a competitive event, and that residents of Vaadhoo, people living in Vaadhoo, as well as one or more individuals from outside the island can be included in the teams. However, the council stated that the responsible person for the team must be a registered resident of Vaadhoo. The council also stated that a maximum of 5 people can participate in a team entering this tournament.

The council stated that cash prizes have been offered for the winning teams in this fishing tournament. Accordingly, a cash prize of 8,000 Rufiyaa is offered for the 1st place team, 5,000 Rufiyaa for the 2nd place team, and 3,000 Rufiyaa for the 3rd place team. The council has also decided to award a cash prize of 500 Rufiyaa to the person who catches the largest and heaviest fish in the tournament.

The council has opened the opportunity for the public to sponsor the fishing tournament and offer prizes for various categories until 2:00 pm on Monday, December 15, 2025.
