UK expresses interest in becoming a strategic partner in developing the Maldives' fisheries sector

The British High Commissioner to the Maldives, Nicholas David Lowe, has expressed interest in becoming a strategic partner to assist in the development of the Maldives' fisheries sector.

He expressed this interest during discussions held during a courtesy call on Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam yesterday.

During the discussions, which were attended by senior officials of the Fisheries Ministry, the British High Commissioner highlighted the priorities of the UK government and expressed interest in becoming a strategic partner to assist in developing the fisheries sector. He also highlighted the importance of the 'Working Group' currently established between the two countries.

Important areas for cooperation were discussed during the meeting, including potential collaboration through a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), scholarship opportunities, exporting tuna to the UK, the upcoming Ocean Climate Partnership Programme (OCPP) workshop, and maritime security initiatives.
