Two FADs deployed in Laamu Atoll

The Fisheries Ministry has established two FADs in Laamu Atoll.

During a trip by the Fisheries Ministry team to Laamu Atoll, a trolling FAD and a pole-and-line FAD were deployed in two areas of the atoll. On the 10th of this month, a trolling FAD was deployed 6 miles east of L. Kanuhuraa. The FAD number is L10V01.

Additionally, on the 11th of this month, a pole-and-line FAD was deployed 15.5 miles southeast of L. Gan. The FAD number is M10D01.

Looking at the Maldives' FAD network, there are currently 119 FADs. These include 54 trolling FADs and 65 pole-and-line FADs.

Trolling FADs, established at a distance of between 3 to 6 miles around islands, are specially designed for trolling and sport fishing. Trolling FADs are designed with a light visible from afar and a radar reflector to easily identify the location of the FAD.

Pole-and-line FADs are specially deployed for pole-and-line fishing or skipjack tuna fishing. It is legally prohibited to conduct other types of fishing in the area surrounding these FADs in a way that obstructs pole-and-line fishing vessels.
