While the government has given deadlines to pay the money MIFCO owes to fishermen, today is the day the government said 30 million Rufiyaa of that money would be released to fishermen.
While fishermen were protesting over unpaid dues, the protest was halted by promising to pay the money in installments on specific dates. Accordingly, the 70 million promised last Wednesday has been fully released.
A statement released by the Fisheries Ministry said that MIFCO had deposited 70 million Rufiyaa to fishermen by Wednesday night, and an additional 30 million would be deposited before Monday. It is not yet confirmed if the money promised for today has started being deposited. Fishermen are currently waiting to receive this money.
Out of the unpaid money for fish bought by MIFCO from fishermen, the government has released 522 million Rufiyaa to fishermen from November 17 of last year until now. This amount is calculated including the money for fuel and ice issued on credit from government facilities. The government says the current "backlog" will be cleared before March 5.
