Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has stated that this is the opportune time to sustainably utilize the Maldives' marine resources.
In a message shared on X, Minister Shiyam said that President Dr. Muizzu's vision to diversify the Maldivian economy has paved the way to access many resources that were previously largely untouched. He added that with the strengthening of the system to protect and monitor the Maldives' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the enhancement of its capabilities, the opportunity to expand the sustainable use of marine resources has been realized.
"With the strengthening of the capability to protect and monitor the EEZ, this is now an opportune time to sustainably utilize marine resources," the Minister stated.
While the government is working to revive the Maldivian economy by relying on the profitability of the ocean, government policies are being shaped in a way that brings profitability while protecting and sustainably maintaining the ocean, lagoons, and marine resources. The government is also working on establishing relevant systems.
Recently, a special application was introduced for fishermen and seafarers. Additionally, a system to monitor the Maldives' maritime territory 24 hours a day using military drones has been established, bringing an air force into existence. All these are matters connected to the safety and profitability of fishermen.
