The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative to the Maldives, Sharan Vimlendra, has stated that this is a highly opportune time to establish an FAO office in the country.
He made these remarks during a consultative meeting held today with senior officials of the Fisheries Ministry. During this meeting, FAO Representative Sharan highlighted that this is a crucial juncture to establish an FAO office in the Maldives, adding that the establishment of an office would increase FAO's cooperation and pave the way to further strengthen the implementation of future projects.
In this meeting, he shared the latest updates on the Anchored Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD) project being conducted in the Maldives with FAO's technical assistance, and noted the importance of utilizing the funds allocated for the fisheries sector in the most beneficial manner.
The consultative meeting, attended by the Minister of State for Fisheries Aminath Hussain Shareef and several senior officials of the Ministry, mainly focused on areas of important cooperation under the FAO's Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP). This includes assisting small-scale targeted projects within broadly defined priorities and providing assistance in drafting the marine resources act.
