Groupers are interconnected with various other species in the ecosystem in many ways, playing several important roles within it. In this regard, groupers are fish that form mutually beneficial relationships. For example, some species of groupers hunt in coordination with other species like eels and octopuses. Additionally, they seek the assistance of cleaner fish, such as the bluestreak cleaner wrasse, to remove parasites like isopods, juvenile tapeworms, nematodes, trematodes, and cestodes from their bodies. Furthermore, groupers play an important role in the flow of energy within the food chain.
Groupers are at the top of the food chain in coral reef environments. However, groupers are not highly active hunters. They are ambush predators that wait for their prey. When prey comes in front of them, they suddenly protrude their jaws, open their mouths wide, and suck the prey along with water into their mouths. They then crush and break down the food using rows of small teeth located towards the back of their throats. Large groupers generally feed on other fish and invertebrates like octopuses and crabs. Juvenile groupers feed on small crabs and shrimp.
Predators that hunt groupers include sharks, barracudas, and eels. In addition, large fish species like manta rays gather at grouper spawning aggregation sites to feed on grouper eggs.
Groupers play a crucial role in the health of the ecosystem and its resilience to various impacts. If grouper spawning aggregations decline in a specific area and the aggregations cease, it is highly likely to have a negative impact on other organisms connected through the food web and the entire ecosystem in that area. Fishing targeted at these aggregations facilitates this decline. Studies conducted in various parts of the world show that fishing targeted at spawning aggregation sites is a cause of the depletion of grouper populations. For example, grouper fishing targeted at spawning aggregations of camouflage groupers and brown-marbled groupers in Palau severely depleted the populations of these two species, bringing grouper exports to a complete halt.
Due to specific characteristics in the biology and behavior of groupers, they are very easily affected by the negative impacts of fishing. According to a study based on the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, which is used to classify the conservation status of species populations, 13% of grouper species are threatened with extinction.
Today, the negative impacts on the environment due to global climate change are disrupting the natural marine ecosystem. The issue of coral bleaching affecting the reefs of the Maldives due to the warming of ocean waters is also an obstacle to the growth of grouper populations. Due to these changes occurring in the ecosystem, significant changes are happening to the species living in that environment. In a situation where such natural disasters are occurring, it is very important to ensure that grouper fishing is conducted sustainably in order to safely manage grouper populations and their habitats.
