Survey work has begun at the site where the government is establishing an ice plant in Dh. Meedhoo.
According to the Fisheries Ministry, the survey is being conducted by a technical team from the ministry and MIFCO. The team is currently active in the area carrying out the survey.
The Dh. Meedhoo ice plant is being built under an ongoing government project to establish 11 additional ice plants across the atolls. Under this project, in addition to Dh. Meedhoo, it has been decided to establish ice plants in Bandidhoo and Rathafandhoo.
Other islands where the government has started establishing ice plants include HA. Dhidhdhoo, HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, Sh. Funadhoo, Sh. Komandoo, Lh. Naifaru, AA. Rasdhoo, and M. Veyvah. Once these 11 ice plants are completed, they will have the capacity to produce 350 tonnes of ice per day.
The construction of these ice plants will be carried out by MIFCO. The project is funded by the state budget and assistance from the Saudi Fund for Development.
While the government has established ice plants in 25 islands so far, the ministry states that establishing additional ice plants will significantly increase the capacity of the ice plant network targeted at fishermen.
Individuals and companies operate 78 ice plants established across various islands in the Maldives. These facilities produce 2,215 tonnes of ice per day.
