The National Meteorological Service has forecasted strong winds, rough seas, and heavy rain across all regions of the Maldives for the next three days.
In a statement released by the MET Office, it was noted that the southwest monsoon has intensified over the Maldives region, with low-pressure areas forming to the north and south away from the country. This has resulted in generally strong winds and very strong gusts during squalls over the northern and central regions during the past four days.
"The strongest wind gust during a squall was recorded in B. Dharavandhoo on October 9, 2024, at 23:10, at a speed of 55 miles per hour," the MET Office stated.
The MET Office reported that wind speeds of 58 miles per hour at 05:40 and 61 miles per hour at 10:46 were recorded at Hulhule today. The heaviest rainfall during this period was recorded in Gn. Fuvahmulah on October 8, 2024, measuring 120 millimeters.
According to the MET Office's weather forecast, generally strong winds will persist across all regions of the Maldives until Monday. In the northern and central atolls, winds are expected to average between 15 and 25 miles per hour, with strong winds, rain, and thunderstorms anticipated over a large area. In the southern atolls, winds are expected to average between 10 and 20 miles per hour, with strong winds, rain, and thunderstorms likely in some atolls.
"Wind gusts of 45 to 55 miles per hour are possible in all areas during squalls," the MET Office stated.
The MET Office indicated that strong winds, rain, and thunderstorms are expected over a large part of the Maldives. It also mentioned that areas prone to swell waves may experience tidal surges during high tide.
The MET Office has urged everyone to be cautious of the weather due to the forecast of strong winds, rough seas, and heavy rain. Seafarers have also been advised to obtain the latest weather information before embarking on journeys.
