President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the spiny dogfish fishery will be reopened in November this year.
He made this statement while speaking to the residents of Kulhudhuffushi City during his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands of South Thiladhunmathi. In his speech, he noted that Kulhudhuffushi previously earned a significant income from the spiny dogfish fishery, and to restart it, relevant authorities are working on reviewing the related regulations. He announced the decision to reopen the spiny dogfish fishery under a designated management plan and called on fishermen to prepare for it.
"A management plan has now been drafted. Under this management plan, the spiny dogfish fishery will be opened starting from November 1. I call upon those who wish to engage in this to prepare to start the work," the President said.
Spiny dogfish fishing is a type of fishery that was practiced in the Maldives years ago and brought significant benefits to fishermen. It was stopped due to the declining shark population in the Maldives. However, the shark population has now increased in the Maldives, and complaints from fishermen about sharks causing difficulties have also been on the rise.
Reef shark fishing, oceanic shark fishing, and spiny dogfish fishing were types of fisheries practiced in the Maldives years ago.
