Skipper Reesham Mohamed Shareef has been appointed to the board of the state fisheries company, MIFCO, as the member representing fishermen.
Announcing his appointment to the position, a document published today by the Privatization and Corporatization Board stated that Reesham Mohamed Shareef (Rihiveli, GDh. Thinadhoo) has been appointed as a member of the MIFCO Board of Directors, following President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's decision to appoint a representative for fishermen to the MIFCO board in order to expand the role of fishermen in the management of MIFCO.
Born into a fishing family, the 42-year-old skipper Reesham entered the fishing industry at the age of 23 as an ordinary fisherman. Having spent his time continuously in fishing since 2003, he began working as a skipper in 2015 in light of the experience he gained. This is his 10th year working as a skipper.
In an interview given to Keyolha, Skipper Reesham stated that appointing a member to represent fishermen on the MIFCO board is a development that will benefit the fishing family in every way. He added that having a fisherman included on the MIFCO board will be a great strength in solving the current difficulties faced by fishermen and in delivering results. Furthermore, noting that the inclusion of fishermen's participation or voice in decision-making is one of the most joyous things, he expressed his deep gratitude on behalf of himself and the fishing family to the current government, especially President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, for making such a decision and facilitating such an opportunity for fishermen.
The skipper said he hopes this will bring about a positive change. He also stated that he hopes this change will pave the way for improving the quality of services provided to fishermen through MIFCO.
