Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has stated that sea level rise directly impacts the national security, economic stability, and societal well-being of the Maldives.
The Minister made these remarks while speaking at a meeting hosted by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) and the Robert Bosch Stiftung today, on the sidelines of the 62nd Munich Security Conference currently underway in Munich, Germany.
During the meeting, held under the theme "Rising Seas, Rising Risks: How to Respond to the Multidimensional Security Challenges Posed by Sea Level Rise," the Minister highlighted the challenges posed by rising sea levels.
In his speech, Minister Dr. Khaleel noted that while climate change is a global issue, its adverse effects impact different countries to varying degrees. He emphasized that the threat is exceptionally high for small island nations like the Maldives, and stated that sea level rise directly affects the Maldives' national security, economic stability, and societal well-being.
Furthermore, the Minister shed light on the efforts being made by the Maldives to overcome the damages caused by climate change. He also highlighted the importance of countries taking robust measures, in addition to the efforts being made to overcome the challenges associated with climate change.
Concluding his remarks, Minister Dr. Khaleel gave assurances that the Maldives will remain steadfast in the fight against climate change. The Minister also called for increased international cooperation to protect countries highly vulnerable to climate change and to ensure a sustainable future.
