Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), which operates the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex (KFC), has stated that repair work on the broken crane used for weighing fish is ongoing without interruption.
KFC uses 4 cranes to weigh fish. Crane-2 has broken down, and MIFCO engineers are currently working on repairing it.
Broken crane will be brought into operation today: MIFCO
MIFCO stated that the company's engineers are working tirelessly to bring Crane-2 back into operation as soon as possible. MIFCO also stated that the engineers will not stop working until the crane is brought back into operation.
Fishermen state that the speed of weighing fish has decreased due to Crane-2 being broken. Furthermore, with a large number of vessels approaching KFC to weigh fish during this period, fishermen highlight the delay in weighing and having to stay moored in the harbour for a long time as a matter of great concern. Also, as fishing has improved with the Northeast Monsoon and payments for weighed fish are being released within 48 hours, many vessels are going out to sea and catching large quantities of fish; fishermen note that the lack of arrangements for easily weighing the caught fish at Kooddoo is evidence that attention has not been given to this issue.
Due to having to spend a long time weighing fish at Kooddoo, the ice plant breaking down and ice being unavailable, and fuel being sold on a controlled basis, fishermen are expressing concern on various social media platforms and criticizing MIFCO and the government.
