The Hoandedhdhoo Council has begun seeking public opinion to designate an area in GDh. Hoandedhdhoo specifically for mariculture and aquaculture businesses.
In an announcement issued by the Hoandedhdhoo Council to notify the public, it stated that a private party has requested land and a 2000-square-meter sea area from Hoandedhdhoo to establish a hatchery and grow-out facility for mariculture and aquaculture business. The council stated that since its aim is to make decisions regarding the island's land in consultation with the public and to find ways for the public to benefit from natural resources, it wants to seek public opinion in determining the most suitable area for this.
The opportunity for all citizens of Hoandedhdhoo to propose the most suitable area to the council for running this project is open until 13:00 on 17 August 2025. Citizens who wish to submit their opinions can do so via an online form.
The main facilities required in the area established under the project to develop mariculture and aquaculture in Hoandedhdhoo include a hatchery and grow-out facility, a fish processing and storage unit, office space, an area with easy access to the lagoon/sea, an area in the sea for 10 net cage units of 5 meters by 5 meters by 3 meters, and an area where anchoring and mooring systems can be placed.
The Hoandedhdhoo Council stated that advancing mariculture and aquaculture businesses in Hoandedhdhoo is an aim of the council, and it intends to start such a business with the objective of paving a way for the public to earn an income using the island's sea and lagoon resources.
