Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has stated that since the ocean is an integral part of Maldivian identity, protecting it is a mandatory obligation for all Maldivians.
In a message shared on social media today to mark World Oceans Day, the Minister stated that the ocean is not just a part of the Maldivian economy, but it is the country's economy, culture, and way of life. Therefore, protecting and sustaining the ocean is not merely a policy choice for Maldivians, but an essential part of their identity that must be done, the Minister said.
To raise awareness about the threats facing the oceans, June 8th of every year is marked as World Oceans Day. World Oceans Day is observed by all UN member states. A new theme is determined each year, and various activities are held at different levels. The theme for this year's World Oceans Day is "Wonder: Sustain What Sustains Us".
To mark World Oceans Day, the Ministry launched a 10-day quiz today named "Ocean Quiz". In this quiz, which consists of 20 questions, important questions about the oceans will be shared daily on the Ministry's social media. Participants can join the quiz by posting the answer as a comment on the question post.
Minister Shiyam is currently in France to participate in the third UN Ocean Conference. The Minister is scheduled to deliver a speech at the opening session of the meeting.
