Protecting sharks and rays is essential to maintain marine biodiversity: Minister Thoriq

Minister of Tourism and Environment Honorable Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that protecting sharks and rays in Maldivian waters is crucial for maintaining the balance of marine life.

Minister Thoriq made these remarks while speaking at an event held to introduce the Global Coalition to save endangered sharks and rays. This event was held on the sidelines of the United Nations Ocean Conference currently underway in Nice, France.

During the event, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim shared the importance of sharks and rays among marine life, and the efforts being undertaken by the Maldives at the national and international levels to protect these species. In this regard, the Minister stated that sharks and rays in Maldivian waters are among the most important components of marine life, and protecting them is essential to maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem.

In his speech, the Minister shared the ongoing efforts by the Maldives to protect and conserve these species. Minister Thoriq noted that this includes banning the capture of these species and protecting the areas where they live.

It is noteworthy that the Maldives has joined the Global Coalition established to save endangered sharks and rays, and is playing a leading role in this effort.
