President Meets with Senior Officials of the Yellowfin Tuna Fishermen's Union

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has today commenced a meeting with the Yellowfin Tuna Fishermen's Union.

In a video shared on X by the President's Office, the President stated regarding the meeting that the most senior officials of the union would attend, and that he was looking forward to the matters to be discussed today.

The President said that the government's policy in advancing the yellowfin tuna fishery is to proceed by listening to the voices of the fishermen active in the field. The President also stated he believes important information required by the government will be obtained from this meeting.

"God willing, the government's aim and also the government's policy is to shape matters by listening to the voices of the people working in every industry," the President said.

This meeting is currently ongoing at the President's Office. The meeting will conclude at 10:30.

Following the cabinet's decision on 13 June 2024 to open up longline fishing in the Maldives, the 'Yellowfin Tuna Fishermen's Union' expressed concern and submitted matters to the President. Taking these into consideration, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu decided on August 29 not to implement the cabinet's decision.

After deciding not to open longline fishing in the Maldives, the President's Office stated on that day that the President would meet with the 'Yellowfin Tuna Fishermen's Union' and all other important relevant parties for further discussions as soon as time permits. Today's meeting is the first meeting held accordingly.

The President's Office has stated that the government will always work to listen to the opinions and advice of the citizens, formulate government policies in a way that finds good solutions to the various concerns of the citizens, and bring positive changes to the country.
