Preparations are underway to dredge the harbour being developed under the Ihavandhoo Fisheries Complex project.
The project contractor, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), stated that the "dredger" required to dredge the harbour was mobilized to the harbour site yesterday. While the harbour development project site was mobilized on the 8th of this month, MTCC stated that preparations are underway to commence the practical work of the project.
This work was contracted to MTCC in August last year. The government had previously stated that 58 million Rufiyaa will be spent to build this 3.5-meter deep harbour, which will be established with a 130-meter long quay wall and the capacity to weigh fish from 3 points.
The foundation stone for the Fisheries Complex being established by the government in HA. Ihavandhoo was laid on January 29th of this year. While it is estimated that a total of 474 million Rufiyaa will be spent on this project, which is being carried out with the financial assistance of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the government has stated that the practical work of this project will begin this May and the project work will be completed within 18 months of commencement.
This project includes:
A 1000-ton cold storage
A 50-ton brine freezing facility
An office building and a warehouse required for the facility
A 7-meter deep, 1000-meter long quay wall
A 4.5-meter deep jetty with a pier to weigh fish from 3 points
The government estimates that once the Fisheries Complex is developed and operational, 150 jobs will be created in Ihavandhoo, and the fishing industry will be further developed.
