Practical Work Ready to Begin on Ihavandhoo Fisheries Complex Harbour

Practical work is set to begin on the harbour being developed under the Ihavandhoo Fisheries Complex project.

The project's contractor, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), stated that the site for the harbour development project was mobilized on the 8th of this month, and preparations are now complete to commence practical work. This project was awarded to MTCC in August of last year. The government previously stated that 58 million Rufiyaa will be spent to construct this 3.5-metre deep harbour, which will feature a 130-metre long quay wall and three fish weighing points.

The foundation for the Fisheries Complex being established by the government in HA. Ihavandhoo was laid on January 29 of this year. The project, carried out with financial assistance from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), is estimated to cost a total of 474 million Rufiyaa. The government has stated that practical work for this project will begin this May and is expected to be completed within 18 months of commencement.

This project includes:

1. A 1000-tonne cold storage

2. A 50-tonne brine freezing facility

3. An office building and a warehouse required for the facility

The government estimates that once the Fisheries Complex is developed and operational, 150 jobs will be created in Ihavandhoo, further developing the fishing industry.

Ihavandhoo is an island with a large fishing population. Currently, fishermen from the island travel to MIFCO's Felivaru Fisheries Complex in Lh. Atoll to weigh their catch. This is a journey that requires significant expenditure in every aspect. Therefore, with the Ihavandhoo Fisheries Complex, fishermen in the north will have the opportunity to reduce their fuel expenses for weighing fish and increase their income from fishing.
