The practical work for the ice plant being established by the government in M. Veyvah has commenced.
Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), which is undertaking the establishment of the ice plant, stated that the necessary equipment has been transported to the site, and the foundation laying work for the ice plant building is currently underway.
The ice plant being established in Veyvah, which includes a 100-tonne ice storage facility, is capable of producing 60 tonnes of flake ice per day.
The Veyvah ice plant project was contracted to MIFCO on 27 September 2025, to be completed within 240 days. MIFCO stated that it aims to complete the work within the stipulated timeframe, and once the ice plant is completed and brought into operation, the assurance of obtaining ice for fishermen in Mulaku Atoll and the surrounding region will increase, bringing further ease to fishing activities.
Under the efforts to facilitate easy access to ice for fishermen, work on 23 ice plants is currently ongoing.
While the government aims to complete the work on these ice plants and bring them into operation this year, the government states that once all these ice plants are operational, the shortage of ice during seasonal fishing will be brought to a complete end.
The projects initiated to establish ice plants in various regions of the Maldives are part of the government's efforts to develop the infrastructure of the Maldives' fisheries sector and expand the services required by fishermen. MIFCO also notes this as part of the efforts being made to sustainably develop fisheries.
