Practical work begins on Kudahuvadhoo harbour project

Practical work on the Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo harbour development project commenced yesterday.

The project's contractor, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), stated that the concrete blocks required for the Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo harbour development project have been transported to the Kudahuvadhoo site, and as the very first work of the project, the construction of the quay wall is currently underway.

The residents of Kudahuvadhoo, which has a population of around four thousand, generally work in the fisheries and tourism sectors. Furthermore, as it is the capital of the atoll, residents living in other islands of the atoll also visit the island for various essential needs such as administrative, health, and commercial purposes, leading to a severe shortage of harbour space. Especially with fishing vessels, cargo boats, speedboats, and dinghies moored in the harbour, it becomes heavily congested and overcrowded. MTCC stated they believe that upon completion of this harbour development, the residents of Kudahuvadhoo will experience numerous benefits and advantages in terms of transportation and the economy.

This is a project awarded to MTCC by the government in August 2023, to be completed within 500 days for 83.33 million Rufiyaa. Under this project, the works include dredging a 103,122 cubic meter area of the lagoon, dredging a 5,545 cubic meter area of the channel, constructing a 180-meter breakwater, constructing a 372-meter quay wall, installing a 115-meter revetment, building a 70-meter long and 2-meter wide bridge, building a 90-meter long and 2-meter wide jetty, constructing a 2,265 square meter pavement, and installing harbour lights and mooring buoys.
