A pole-and-line FAD has been deployed off R. Maafaru.
The Fisheries Ministry team today deployed a replacement for the lost R. Meedhoo FAD. Once again, the FAD was deployed in the same area it was previously located, 16 miles west of Maafaru. The FAD number is F08D02.
In addition to the FAD deployed today, there are two other pole-and-line FADs in R Atoll. The Kandholhudhoo FAD is located 16.8 miles west of Huraa. The other FAD is located 35 miles west of Bodufaru.
After a pause for Ramadan, the Fisheries Ministry has resumed the work of re-establishing lost FADs. The Maldives' pole-and-line FAD network consists of 65 FADs. Currently, 5 pole-and-line FADs have been lost. While the Fisheries Ministry is re-establishing lost FADs under a specific policy, delays in re-deploying FADs are due to the high costs involved and the fact that FADs are currently being manufactured at only one center.
