A Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) specifically for pole-and-line fishing has been deployed off N. Maafaru.
The Fisheries Ministry stated that the Maafaru pole-and-line FAD was established today, 9.5 miles east of the island.
The number of the pole-and-line FAD deployed in Maafaru is E10D01-02. The Maafaru FAD is the only FAD specifically designated for pole-and-line fishing in N. Atoll. The FAD deployed off Maafaru today is a replacement for the previously used FAD. The previous FAD was located 8.5 miles east.
In 2023, two trolling FADs or sports fishing FADs were established in N. Atoll. These are the two FADs located 5 miles northeast of Kendhikulhudhoo and 5 miles south of Manadhoo. Although these two FADs are designated for sports fishing, following the latest amendment to the general fisheries regulations, pole-and-line fishing can also be carried out near these FADs.
