Minister of Local Councils Adam Shareef Umar has stated that efforts are underway to find a permanent solution to the issue of bigeye scad dying and rotting after entering the HDh. Vaikaradhoo lagoon.
Regarding this matter, the Minister stated that he has spoken with the Council President Zamir about the issue of bigeye scad getting trapped and dying in the Vaikaradhoo lagoon, and gathered information on the work being done in collaboration with the government to find a permanent solution. He also stated that he will hold further discussions with the relevant ministries.
On Thursday night, a large number of fish entered the Vaikaradhoo lagoon. Thousands of fish that entered the lagoon got trapped, died, and rotted, which were then cleaned up by the council and citizens working together.
According to the Vaikaradhoo Council, this happens because the island's harbour is built in a way that prevents water currents from flowing, and there is not enough oxygen in the lagoon for the fish that enter. Therefore, the permanent solution to this is to repair the inner and outer seawalls. This has been included in this year's state budget.
The Vaikaradhoo harbour was developed during the Maumoon administration. It was not changed because the island's residents wanted it that way. However, due to the problems currently arising from the state of the lagoon, the island's residents now want to bring changes to the harbour to solve the issue.
