The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has announced that participants who complete the Basic Rangers Course training programme in Laamu Atoll under the 'Endheri' project will receive a Niyami 2 course certificate.
Conducted in collaboration with the Maldives National University (MNU) under the Endheri project, this training programme is designed to focus on the environmental, social, and administrative characteristics of Laamu Atoll. The objective is to produce rangers equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to optimally manage the protected areas of Laamu Atoll.
The first round of the Basic Rangers Course is dedicated to Laamu Atoll. The ministry stated that the course will cover environmental science, environmental law and enforcement, enhancing social participation and awareness, basic computer skills, and navigation (Niyami) subjects. Participants who complete this course will receive a Niyami 2 course certificate.
The 12-week training course, scheduled to be conducted over various days, will be divided into two parts and held at the MNU L. Gan campus. This includes both theoretical and practical sessions.
Targeting 20 participants, the opportunity to join this course was opened yesterday. The ministry stated that in selecting participants, priority will be given to choosing one individual from each inhabited island in L. Atoll. Furthermore, priority will be given to women in the selection process, and participants will receive an allowance of MVR 4,500.00, according to the ministry.
The deadline for submitting the application form and other required documents is before 14:00 on Wednesday, 30 April 2025. Applications must be submitted online via email to endheri@environment.gov.mv. The ministry noted that further information regarding this can be obtained by contacting the Endheri Project's Project Implementation Unit in Laamu Atoll at 7257321.
The "Enhancing National Development through Environmentally Resilient Islands" (Endheri) project, implemented by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment on behalf of the Maldivian government, was established in 2021. Its purpose is to assess the natural capital of Maldivian islands, determine sustainable ways to utilize these resources, and raise awareness among the general public and industries reliant on these resources.
The aim of this project is to assist in the implementation of newly established environmental policies by the Maldivian government and to support the adoption of "green growth" or sustainable use of marine natural capital in atoll development, fostering development concepts that enhance the resilience and recovery of coral reefs. This project is designed to find ways to incorporate the Maldives' biodiversity and natural capital accounts into the national capital. By utilizing these accounts, the project seeks to protect and sustain the natural systems connected to the Maldivian reef environment, enhance the health and resilience of these ecosystems, and find ways to minimize and replicate systems that mitigate the adverse impacts of development projects.
