The Marine Hatchery Skills Development Program is a joint initiative conducted by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources and the Maldives Marine Research Institute. Included in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's "Hafuthaa 14" (Week 14) roadmap, the program aims to develop mariculture, provide additional income and employment opportunities near islands for people living across the Maldives, and further expand and diversify economic activities in the country. Under this program, the first training program to teach youth how to establish hatcheries required for reef fish breeding and aquaculture skills was conducted from February 8 to 21. Fifteen individuals from various regions of the Maldives participated in that training program.
The Ministry of Fisheries is undertaking numerous efforts to establish and develop a mariculture industry in the Maldives. This includes a program to sell sea cages and live juvenile groupers to parties interested in mariculture. The arrangement to provide sea cages and live juvenile groupers to private parties is facilitated to pave the way for mariculture businesses by growing groupers.
Furthermore, under the efforts to designate mariculture as a distinct industry, the Ministry is working on allocating specific special zones for mariculture. In this regard, working with relevant stakeholders, four areas suitable for aquaculture have been identified, and the advice of the Cabinet of Ministers has been sought regarding the matter.
