The Male' City Council has given a deadline to remove vessels that are illegally moored and not travelling in the lagoon area north of Male', which is designated for fishing vessels.
In an announcement published today, the City Council stated that, contrary to the regulations on managing the lagoons of Male' and Villingili, there are four vessels moored in various parts of the lagoon for a long period without travelling and without a responsible party to look after them, including vessels without any registration numbers. The announcement also noted that the council has been receiving complaints that these vessels are causing significant difficulties for those who use the lagoon with proper permission according to the lagoon regulations.

The council stated that the owners of these vessels or the parties responsible for managing them must present themselves to the council, notify them of the matter, and remove the vessels by the end of 10 February 2025.
"When the owner of the vessel presents themselves to the council regarding the vessel, they must bring a copy of the vessel's registration and a copy of the owner's Maldivian national identity card. If it is the party responsible for managing the vessel, they must bring their Maldivian national identity card, resolve the issue regarding the vessel, and the owners of the vessels are requested to remove the vessels from the Male' lagoon," the City Council stated.
The City Council stated that any such vessels not removed after 10 February will be considered abandoned in the lagoon without a responsible party, and will be removed in accordance with the regulations on managing the lagoons of Male' and Villingili and taken to a designated area in the Villingili harbour. The council also stated that it will not be responsible for any damage caused to the vessels or the items on board during the removal, transportation, or after being placed there.
