Nominations open for Skipper and Reef Fisherman Awards

The opportunity to submit nominations for the awards to be presented at this year's Fishermen's Day ceremony has been opened.

In an announcement published today, the Fisheries Ministry stated that the opportunity to submit nominations for three awards selected on the occasion of this year's Fishermen's Day is open from today until 14:00 on Thursday, 7 November 2024. The Ministry said that there will be an opportunity to submit nominations for these awards either in a personal capacity or by another party.

The Ministry has opened applications for the most serviceable young skipper (under 35 years) who is currently actively engaged in fishing and does not do any other work to earn an income other than fishing, the most experienced skipper (over 35 years) who is currently actively engaged in fishing and does not do any other work to earn an income other than fishing, and the serviceable reef fisherman award for those whose main income-generating work is reef fishing.

The Ministry has requested parties who meet the requirements and wish to apply for these awards to complete the designated form and send it to the Ministry's email address fisheriesmanagement@fisheries.gov.mv before the given deadline. The two forms prepared for applying for the awards are available for download from the Ministry's website www.fisheries.gov.mv.

Although it was previously decided to hold the official celebrations of this year's Fishermen's Day in B. Thulhaadhoo, the government has now arranged to hold the official activities of Fishermen's Day in Male' City. The Ministry has stated that this is a decision made to implement the government's cost-cutting policy.

Since 1989, December 10 of every year has been celebrated in the Maldives as Fishermen's Day. As such, this year marks the 44th Fishermen's Day.
