The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has decided to hold a nationwide reef fishing tournament to mark this year's World Oceans Day.
The tournament, aimed at reviving the excitement of fishing in a competitive environment and celebrating World Oceans Day in a colorful manner, will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 15:00 to 21:00. In Male' City, the opening and closing ceremonies of the tournament will be held at the Hulhumale' Ferry Terminal area. In the islands, the tournament will be held in a specific area determined by the respective island council.
The Ministry has now opened the opportunity to participate in this tournament, organized jointly by the Ministry and island councils. Those who wish to participate in the tournament are requested by the Ministry to complete the relevant form (https://tinyurl.com/4xe7p9jv) and submit it before 14:00 on June 17, 2026. From Male' City, the opportunity to participate in this tournament will be given to the first 20 eligible teams that submit the form. The number of teams participating from the islands will be determined by the respective island council.
The tournament will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places overall, as well as the person who catches the heaviest fish in the entire tournament. The Ministry stated that cash prizes will be awarded for these categories.
- 1st place team: 30,000 Rufiyaa
- 2nd place team: 25,000 Rufiyaa
- 3rd place team: 20,000 Rufiyaa
- Heaviest fish caught: 5,000 Rufiyaa
June 8 of every year is celebrated as World Oceans Day. To mark Oceans Day, the Ministry has planned to conduct a special event this year under the name "Ocean Fest".
